Three street racing games in one software package.

Within this bundle of software, there are three racing games. One is called “Street Racer” and is nothing like the suspiciously similarly named game “Street Race.” There is “Night Street Racing” which cleverly uses light to mask the fact that it cannot live up to modern graphics. Then, there is “Illegal Street Racers” that looks like it is trying to be like a Driver clone but on a smaller budget.

Street Racer

The game “Street Racer” has no affiliation with the Playstation 1 game of the same name. Handling is a little clunky, but is not buggy, which may be expected with a game that was produced with a smaller budget. It is the first of two Street Racer games, with the second one being set in Europe. Your job is to race around a city street that is reasonably coloured and rendered, but has repetitive textures and imagery. You drive the car from above, which makes the game look a little like one of the first GTA games. You get to unlock a new car after every two races, and you need to finish first in each race in order to move on to the next.

Night Street Racing

You drive a car around a city at night, and if you have ever seen this game in action, then you may notice that it has deceptively good graphics. However, it is nothing but a clever trick by the developers. They have used light very well to make their cars look more three-dimensional, to make them look more toned, and to make the backgrounds and environments look prettier. If the light sources were removed from the rendering, you would just see a collection of modelled cars with little detail, but with the lighting effects they look passably okay. The driving experience is limited, but it has at least four to six hours of gameplay in it before it becomes repetitive.

Illegal Street Racing

When you play, you can tell it is a retro game, but the graphics look slightly better because the modelling is of a higher quality, they have used clever lighting trick as the “Night Street Racer” game did, and the surroundings blur when you drive so that it feels like you are going faster. The nitro adds a fun element to the game, and the mini-map is easy to understand.

Pros

  • There is at least a day‘s worth of material with all three combined
  • They offer a nice challenge for racing fans
  • Each is different in its own way

Cons

  • Street Racer has repetitive textures, objects and maps
  • None of the games have genuine replayability
  • All three become repetitive and boring after a few hours
